This sturdy single seat, single engine fighter aircraft, which is widely regarded as Germany’s best fighter aircraft of World War II, was originally restored in America and brought to Australia by Raptor Aviation last year.
Director of Bright Events Mark Bright, who with his wife Kerry, has organised this spectacular event, said the airshow at Illawarra Regional Airport is the biggest and best annual airshow in Australia.
“We are so excited to have this German war bird, which is so important to world aviation history. It is the only aircraft of its type in Australia and those who attend the show will not only get the chance to see it as part of the flying display, they will be able get up close to this magnificent aircraft,” he said.
Along with its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Focke-Wulf 190 became the backbone of the Luftwaffe's Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force) during WWII. “It maintained superiority over Allied fighters until the introduction of the improved Spitfire Mk. IX. We were expecting to have the Focker-Wulf in last year’s show”.
“But unfortunately at the very last minute the canopy failed. It has taken almost a year to get it back in the air so we are extremely excited that we can feature it this year,” he said.
This year’s airshow will include military aviators, Australia’s best acrobatic pilots and an array of ground displays, including the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s Mirage III fighter and retired Qantas Boeing 747-400.
The NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, has secured Wings Over Illawarra from 2017 – 2019.
