And the Chevalier College graduate hopes to make the most of the opportunities afforded to her for winning the ‘’prestigious award’’.
The University of Wollongong scholarship acts as a memorial for Oak Flats resident Casey-Lee Hull, who was part of the first cohort of students to participate in the In2Uni’s University Preparation Program (UPP) in 2014.
The teenager was killed in a car accident in July, 2014 before finishing the program and her HSC.
The $1000 scholarship is awarded to a current UOW student who has attained the highest raw ATAR score for the previous year and completed the UPP.
Miss Semken is completing a Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours, Dean’s Scholar).
‘’It is an incredible honour to be a part of the UPP and get this award,’’ she said.
The 19-year-old who grew up in Moss Vale scored a 93.5 ATAR score.
‘’My aim now is to apply the skills I learn in medicinal chemistry to pharmaceutical development,’’ she said.
The UPP initiative, now in its fourth year, is for Year 12 students at high schools in the Illawarra and South East regions who are completing subjects leading to an ATAR and want additional support to get into their chosen course at university.
In 2016 more than 400 students took part in the UPP across UOW campuses in Wollongong, Bega, Batemans Bay, Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands.
