While the launch date and location are yet to be determined, a company spokeswoman said the stations are “free-standing in car parks that are linked to amenities”.
The Nowra station was one of 5000 planned around the world, and the first on the South Coast.
At present the closest Supercharger is in Sydney.
A Tesla blog post said many of the Supercharger sites would be built further off the highway to allow local Tesla drivers to charge quickly when needed, “with the goal of making charging ubiquitous in urban centres”.
The spokeswoman said the idea behind the Supercharger station is to allow for long-distance travel.
“They are positioned approximately 200km from each other to allow our owners to travel to key destinations,” the spokeswoman said.
“Supercharging allows for 270km in just 30 minutes. This highlights that these stations are for a quick charge of the car and a recharge of the driver before continuing the journey.”
There are already so-called “Destination Chargers” dotted along the South Coast, including the car park at Wollongong Central.
“The wall connectors found in Wollongong make sense as it is a destination,” the spokeswoman said.
“We are working with hotels, resorts, shopping centres and restaurants to install Destination Charging for our owners to use the same infrastructure they have at home at locations where they will stop for a period of time.”
