He was indeed an Australian television star, but by no means ordinary. What “star” choses to stay in a cabin at a caravan park rather than one of the more plush hotels in the city centre. Samuel Johnson, that’s who.
“Maaatttttteee, it’s right near the beach ….. and it’s got a pool,’’ he said in his recognisable drawl as he jumped into the passenger seat.
His voice features on a lot of television ads and his voiceover work is how Johnson keeps a roof over his head, especially now having famously quit acting since portraying Molly Meldrum in the TV series for which he won two Logies last weekend including the gold.
Not long finished filming the famous Molly mini series which would not air until 2016, Johnson was in Wollongong in mid 2015 for a two-person play he was touring around the country with Tottie Goldsmith.
He was keen to go for a trip to Symbio to be reunited with a young croc he’d met on his unicycle tour of the country to raise funds for his cancer charity Love Your Sister founded with his sister Connie who was battling breast cancer.
The least I could while Sam was in the Gong was feed his love of nature and keep him occupied. Those who know him will attest he is a ball of nervous energy. A person who needs a focus.
Quitting acting at the height of his career, Sam has vowed to not return until he has raised $10million for cancer research.
Next month in Canberra Sam and his sister Connie are attempting a world record with Love Your Sister in helping to line up more than 75 km of coins in the shape of a giant love heart, all which will be donated to cancer research.
