The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has crunched the numbers and released its latest taxation snapshot – for the 2014/15 financial year.
A Mercury analysis of the ATO data, which is broken down by postcode, showed the average taxable income for individuals was higher the further you travelled north of the Wollongong CBD.
The 2515 and 2516 postcodes – which include suburbs stretching from Bulli to Clifton – sat atop the list with an ‘average taxable income or loss’ in excess of $65,000.
The 2515 and 2533 (Kiama) postcodes were the only areas to record a decrease in average taxable income.
At the other end of the scale, those with the region’s lowest taxable income were from the Warrawong and Lake Heights areas.
There, in the 2502 postcode, the average figure was $44,163 in 2014/15, up slightly from the previous year.
The disparity between the region’s high income and low income suburbs was reflective of previous years.
The ATO data also revealed the ‘average salary and wages’ figures for many of the region’s suburbs have remained stagnant, but were again highest in the northern parts of the region.
In the 2500 postcode, which includes Wollongong, the average salary and wages figure was $55,515 in 2014/15.
It was $55,125 in 2013/14. In the Bellambi and Corrimal area (postcode 2518), the average salary/wages rose just $18 between 2013/14 and 2014/15.
