MP David Shoebridge said the 2008 Plan of Management, which governs the future uses of Stuart Park and other foreshore land, was “the last act of the corrupt Labor-dominated 2008 Wollongong Council”.
He said the plan was “pro-development and pro-privatisation”, and adopting it was “an extraordinary display of “whatever it takes” politics to drive the partial privatisation of public land”.
“This is the worst of NSW politics, resurrecting the 10 year old pro-development plans of a corrupt council in order to privatise public land,” Mr Shoebridge said.
“Nothing seems to change in this state. Gareth Ward should not be celebrating, he should be hiding his head in shame that he is helping privatise Wollongong’s scarce green open space.”
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said he was pleased that the state government had given the council “clarity” about the way Stuart Park was governed.
“Yes, the council in 2008 was sacked, but this plan has been scrutinised by ICAC and the administrators and it wasn’t questioned,” he said.
“With one POM now in place, the council can continue its work towards making the whole of the City Foreshore a desirable and enjoyable location for residents and visitors to Wollongong.”
