There is a gap of several hours in the middle of the day where no 887 buses run.
This leads to the first buses heading to Campbelltown in the afternoon being full, with some students forced to stand in the aisles.
“The University of Wollongong is acutely aware of issues students have raised with the 887 Campbelltown to Wollongong bus service,” a university spokesman said.
“Alternative transport options, including reliable public transport, play a vital role in enabling students to access higher education opportunities at UOW.
“For the well-being of our students, we want to do all we can to ensure these services are safe, punctual and efficient.”
The spokesman said the university was working with government to find a solution.
“The university has an ongoing dialogue between Transport for NSW and local members of state parliament to ensure the issues are understood and all stakeholders are working together towards a solution,” the spokesman said.
“This has included highlighting the popularity of the service and the passing on of feedback and concerns raised by students using the service.”
A Transport for NSW spokesman said earlier this week they were looking at demand on all Campbelltown bus routes “so we can ensure any future network improvements put bus services when and where they’re needed”.
