Rip Tide is one of six films aimed at younger audiences to screen at the 64th Sydney Film Festival, with viewings at the George Street Cinema and in Randwick.
Bulli director Rhiannon Bannenberg was at the helm of feature film about surfing, romance and deciding what to do with your life.
Disney star Debby Ryan makes her Australian film debut alongside fellow Disney regular Naomi Sequeira and well-known Australian actors Jeremy Lindsay Taylor and Marcus Graham.
“Debby really enjoyed her time here in Australia and has hinted more than once how much she’d like to return,” said producer Steve Jaggi.
Meantime Canadian/Australian Jaggi head-hunted Bannenberg to work on the film and described her as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging film-makers.
His company are currently developing two other films the her and are looking to shoot one of them towards the end of the year.
“On Rip Tide, Rhiannon has proved herself not only as an artist, she also demonstrated an ability to wrangle a large, professional crew, keep to schedule, and budget, while bringing out the best from talent both in front of and behind the camera,” Jaggi said.
It’s the second film shot in the Illawarra to be featured in the film festival which runs from June 7 to 18, with How The Light Gets In by Otford film-maker Anya Beyersdorf also making its world debut.
