Things to swing on and trampolines to jump on. Tick, tick.
The revamped Kanahooka Park playground delivered this and much more.
And the kids who helped Wollongong City Council in the design process had a ball testing out the brand new equipment during Wednesday’s official opening.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said council staff worked with students from Koonawarra Public School and Koonawarra Preschool to develop a concept for the popular playground in Lakeside Drive.
‘’It’s good to see the kids here to enjoy the fruits of their labours,’’ Cr Bradbery said.
‘’After all, it was their ideas honed through a series of group discussions that came up with the essential components of this playground’s design and has resulted in something to swing and climb, trampolines to jump on and waterplay options.’’
Unanderra-based playground manufacturer Moduplay completed the work at the Kanahooka Park playground which also incorporates a dry creek bed providing kids an opportunity to play and explore in a natural environment.
Cr Bradbery said the playground renewal is linked to Council’s commitment to reinvest in play space renewal, as is outlined in the Play Wollongong Strategy 2014-2024.
‘’Over the past 12 months we’ve invested $1.34 million into the renewal of nine aged playground across the city and before the financial year wraps up we plan to complete a renewal of a further seven playgrounds,’’’ he said.
‘’This is on top of $4.44 million we have spent over the past five years and ahead of a proposal to spend a further $1.2 million in the next financial year on renewals.’’
