From the day your child is born, totally dependent on you, it’s your job to teach them little by little, the skills that will one day see them become a confident, independent adult.
Preparing for school is one of the first big steps in this process. Armed with a few key strategies you can help your child soar into Kindergarten with confidence.
Fine motor skills are very important for writing. Upper body strength can be built by playing on park equipment, enhancing your child’s ability to control fine motor equipment such as pencils.
Read to your child every day. This fosters a love of books, builds vocabulary, teaches them about sentences and helps build concentration skills. Talk about the world together to enrich your child’s vocabulary by introducing new words.

Learning the alphabet is fun but talking about letter sounds rather than letter names will be helpful as your child begins to read and write. For example ask, “What sound can you hear at the beginning of this word?” Learning letter sounds is a fantastic way to prepare to learn to read and write.
Encourage mathematical concepts at home during everyday conversation. Be creative and make games up with your child such as counting cars of various colours.
Positivity and resilience are key factors when preparing your child for a flying start to school. After losing a game say, “Well done, I love it that sometimes I win and sometimes you win”. Encourage your child to be open minded and flexible, this will prepare them to cope with the many variables that can occur in a school day.
