However, the 80km/h section on the northbound side will also be extended.

Roads and Maritime Services and the Centre For Road Safety announced a review of the speed limits along the road after a spate of serious accidents and one fatality in a five-week period from September last year.

Eighteen-year-old Jesse Brown died on Windang Road on September 14 after allegedly street racing.

The result of the study will see the 70km/h section of the road – through the Windang CBD – cut to 60km/h

“In the five years to September 2016, there were 42 crashes on this section of Windang Road resulting in 37 casualties including eight people seriously injured,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said.

For motorists heading south, the new 60km/h speed zone will start from 220 metres north of Boundary Road – near the golfing range – and continue for 40 metres beyond Fern Street.

Northbound drivers will see the 60km/h zone start 40 metres south of Fern Street  and finish 80 metres north of Wattle Street.

This will also mean the 80km/h zone will become slightly larger northbound – it will be moved further south to start 80 metres north of Wattle Street.

“The review found that a reduction in the current speed zone was appropriate due to the high crash rate, level of roadside development and the amount of pedestrian activity,” the RMS spokesman said.

“Reducing the speed limit will provide a much safer road environment for motorists and pedestrians.”

The new speed limit will come into effect on May 29.
