The stalls, which the university says could attract between 200 and 1000 people, would be set up under new shade pavilions and are slated to be held on Friday night and daytime on Saturday or Sunday.
The institution has lodged a separate application with Wollongong City Council to build four timber and galvanised steel pavilions alongside the campus entry road, off Squires Way, next to the main iC Central building.
These pavilions are proposed as “meeting places” for campus users, and some would be left with open roofs to allow existing banksia trees to grow through.
A fifth, larger structure, made from steel and spanning 16x16 metres is proposed for behind the Central building and would house up to 30 market stalls.
According to documents now on public exhibition, holding markets would “enhance the use of the campus by giving the public more opportunities to visit the campus on a regular basis”.
The Friday night markets would be held from 4pm to 10.30pm, the UOW plans say, with stallholders setting up at 2pm and packing up by midnight.
The second weekly market would would operate between 9am and 3pm, excluding set up and dismantling times.
“The types of stalls proposed include food stalls and varied products,” the plans say.
“The University will not allow birds or animals to be sold, weapons, illegal products, drugs or offensive material.”
The plans are open for comment until June 2.
