Real Estate Institute of New South Wales hosted the charity event at Lagoon Restaurant last Thursday night.
Mr McKinnon from MMJ won this year’s competition, which comprised ten entrants from throughout the Illawarra.
Entrants can’t be a professional auctioneer, and have undertaken less than five auctions. They were competing for a spot in the state finals. The event raised funds for the McGrath Foundation and the Illawarra Convoy.
About $11,000 was raised this year from sponsors’ donations and the competitors’ auctions of donated gifts.
Trever Molenaar, chairman of the Real Estate Institute Illawarra said Mr Mackenzie “was quite polished and confident”.
“We believe in getting the real estate industry together not only to support great charities, but also to mentor the young guns of the industry,” Mr Molenaar said.
“While it was a good night for ‘novice auctioneers’ to hone their skills, it's great to give back to the community.”
Mr Molenaar said confidence, being able to speak in front of an audience and being articulate were key facets of being a good auctioneer.
“I think most people don’t want to do it (host an auction), but once they’ve done it every single person walks away saying, ‘I’m glad I’ve done that’,” he said.
