The training duo headed south with three top chances and they didn’t disappoint on what was a perfect day for racing in the Illawarra.
El Venetian (race one) kicked things off by taking out the first, but the best was yet to come courtesy of promising wins from Hualalai and Street Pursuit.
Hualalai ($2.70) was ridden by Tommy Berry at his first-up assignment and proved too classy when wearing down Siam ($3.20) in the Albion Park Cellar 2YO Maiden Plate (1200m), with Matt Smith’s Touch Of Mink ($9.50) in third.
“We have got a lot of confidence in the horse and think he is going to be a nice horse but he has just taken a little bit of time,” stable representative Neil Paine said.
“Just at the furlong there he put his head on the side.
“I reckon that’s just green-ness. He just didn’t know how to get past the horse.
“That will improve him a lot though so Gai and Adrian will be stoked.”
If Hualalai, his stablemate Street Pursuit was utterly dominant. Jockey Josh Parr was never troubled on the $1.70 favourite and easily scored by 4-¾ lengths over John Thompson’s Domed in the Collegians Maiden Handicap (1300m).
