Atfield will be joined by Corrimal duo Georgie Brooker and Rikeya Horne and Berkeley’s Brittany Constable in the squad – which already includes Helensburgh’s Kezie Apps and Sam Bremmer.

“It means the world to me to be called up into the New South Wales squad,” Atfield said.

“When I got an email saying that I was selected, I was in absolute shock and couldn't believe it. 

“I set one goal for this year and that was to make the Country side and to be selected in the train-on squad for the State of Origin team is amazing and one step better.”

Atfield, 24, had her first session with the Blues squad, which also includes Gerringong’s Ruan Sims, at the weekend,

“The training was very good - I was very nervous on my way up to Sydney for training on Sunday but all the girls made me feel very welcome and they are such a good bunch of girls,” she said.

“We had a field session then we had a theory session as well – it was very good and I loved every minute of it.”

The squad will next reconvene on June 4 ahead of their State of Origin encounter at WIN Stadium on Sunday, July 23.

“At the first session, biggest thing I learnt was the level of training required at this level and trying to wrap my head around the plays,” Atfield said.

“Training is every fortnight and our next session is June 4 up in Sydney again, which should be great.

“The coaches have us fill out forms every morning when we wake-up so they can keep up with what training we are doing and how well we sleep and everything in general, which is good.”
