OPINION
I hadn’t stepped foot in Wollongong’s Dicey Riley’s for years until a week ago and wow have things changed.
The last time I can recall hanging at the live music venue and haunt on St Patrick’s Day, it was to see an INXS cover band.
It was my friend’s birthday, the floor was sticky and the drinks flowed quickly.
My mate wasn’t keen to stay, yet thinking it would be impolite to leave your own birthday party that you invited everyone to, we devised a plan.
We decided to try and get removed from the venue in the best fashion we could (but not in a manner that would see us arrested).
We tried taking the printed set-list taped to the amplifier. How could the band play on without knowing what to sing? They obviously had good memories.
From there we tried jumping on stage and stealing the microphone to sing the best bits of “Never Tear Us Apart”.
The singer (who looked like Professor Snape) was not impressed but the bouncers just watched and smiled.
We even tried taking all the bar mats from the bar and visibly place them in my handbag within a metre of the bouncers. Still no deal.
So in the end my mate made an excuse of feeling unwell, forcing him to leave his own party.
It was a very different scene the other week, though a live band still played as we entered the main doors.
It seemed like Mr Sheen and his friends may have visited recently, wiping that sticky sensation from under my feet.
I’d never noticed the cool memorabilia on the way back to the bistro, the comfy arm chairs and a roaring fire (something every Irish pub should have).
What then ensued was a deliciously cheap steak and veg while my dinner date had a chicken burger.
