Police said the 65-year-old, from Botany, was riding down Jamberoo Mountain Road with a group of friends when the accident happened about midday.
Inspector Brian Pedersen, from Lake Illawarra police, said the rider lost control and hit a dirt embankment.
Inspector Pedersen said the motorcycle then crossed onto the other side of the road and hit an guardrail where the man “sustained fatal injuries”.
“At this stage, we do not believe that excessive speed was a factor, however, that will be subject to the ongoing investigation,” he said.
“The motorcycle has been seized for mechanical examination.”
Witnesses are being spoken to by Lake Illawarra detectives.
Jamberoo Mountain Road was closed in both directions between the Illawarra Highway and Jamberoo Road, but reopened about 3pm.
