The Grand, on the corner of Keira and Burelli streets, is the only Illawarra nightspot to feature on the NSW government’s latest violent venues list.
According to Liquor and Gaming NSW, 14 assaults were recorded at the Wollongong hotel between January 1 and December 31 last year.
Sydney’s Ivy nightclub (36 assaults) was the only venue in the most-restrictive level 1 category.
The Grand Hotel was one of 14 venues on level 2 restrictions – a list that included Sydney’s Home Nightclub (17 assaults), PJ’s Irish Pub Parramatta (16), Sydney Junction Hotel in Hamilton (16) and Erina’s The Sunken Monkey Hotel (16).
Venues with 12 or more incidents are placed on the list and subject to strict conditions and increased monitoring.
Conditions – including alcohol service ending 30 minutes before close, or no shots and drink limits after midnight – are imposed on level 1 and level 2 venues under the Liquor Act.
“Listed venues will be closely monitored but the results show the level of violent incidents remains on a longer-term downward trend,” Liquor and Gaming NSW Deputy Secretary Paul Newson said.
“The violent venues scheme has made a significant contribution to this reduction and helped ensure the community can enjoy safer nights out.”
The Grand Hotel also featured on a previous violent venues list, with 12 assaults reported between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.
The Mercury contacted The Grand Hotel for comment.
