Paramedics were called to reports of a shooting in Illowra Crescent about 1.30pm on Monday.
The woman has been transported to Wollongong hospital with a gunshot wound in her left leg.
She is yet to make a statement to police.
A resident, Ingrid, said she heard concerning noises coming from a property on the corner of Illowra Crescent and Illowra Parkway about 1.15pm.
"I heard one shot at first then I heard a scream. My dog started barking then there was another shot after that," she said.
"I heard people yelling, saying 'no,no'. It was females that I heard.
"I could see people running past my place at the time.
“Because I was with him,” she said, indicating to her infant son, "I just ducked down and hid."
Ingrid later learnt from a neighbour that a woman at the property had been shot in the leg.
"I could tell that something had happened and something was wrong," Ingrid said.
"It was a bit scary to think something like that could happen in our neighbourhood."
A section of Illowra Parkway has been cordoned off with police tape, and the Forensic Services Group has arrived on scene.
Police attention is focused on the corner of the two streets.
