The highest tide of the year ended a weekend of torrential rain that had the SES on high alert with more than 800 requests for assistance and 24 flood rescues on the morning of June 5 alone – most involved people who had driven into flood waters.
Wollongong couple Justin and Jema Craig woke up early on the Sunday morning to find water lapping at their front door.
Water had inundated the yard of their home at the corner of Swan and Evans streets – one of the areas worst affected by the weekend storms.
A boat named Hammer’n certainly copped a hammering, as it broke free from its moorings and was washed out of Wollongong Harbour onto Brighton Beach in the storms.
The region’s beaches bore the brunt of the storms and huge seas with North Wollongong’s Puckeys Beach strewn with piles of rubbish; odd thongs, paint cans, doll parts and lots of plastic bottles were tangled in the debris that had washed up on the shore next to the lagoon.
