The weatherboard building at 351 Princes Highway belonged to the Woonona Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Masonic appendant body open to both men and women.
According to the society’s website, it was founded by a Freemason in the mid-19th century with the aim to bring together “the worthy wives, widows, daughters and sisters of Freemasons and to secure to them advantages from a moral, social and charitable point of view”.
Selling agent of the 613 sqm block Matt Dignam said rising costs and a restructure meant the Chapter no longer needed the property, hidden behind a smash repairer.
He said property permits (subject to approval) an array of ventures: for example a medical centre, childcare centre, shop top housing, vets or wholesale supplies.
