Convenience is key but not when it comes to killing our environment, it seems.
Since word got out that the average coffee cup is unable to be recycled anywhere in Australia it’s been a major player infiltrating my social media feeds.
It is shocking. Disposable coffee cups, which look like they’re cardboard, actually contain plastics which don’t break down with about a billion clogging up landfill each year.
Many in the Illawarra Mercury office have since stepped up to the BYO coffee cup revolution in a bid to cut the polution, as have many others.
Unneccesary packaging is another gripe for Aussies.
When Leanne Stokan took to Woolworth’s Facebook page last week to complain about the excessive plastive packaging used for vegetables it was shared almost 11,000 times.
It is something I’ve often pondered as fresh produce has been sold – and eaten – sans packing for decades, if not centuries.
Last week I bought a sushi roll and when I took it out of the paper bag I discovered it was vacuum-sealed in three different pieces of plastic!
The instructions inside the first piece of plastic explained it was a “roll your own” sushi. So the kitchenhands pre-make sections of the roll before wrapping it in plastic.
Here I was thinkingin I’d bought a simple stick of rice and veg wrapped in seaweed.
What do you prefer? With packaging or without? (This can apply to take-away containers to coffee cups to sweet potato)
