Mr Tonge moved to Wollongong 23 years ago and he has performed many voluntary roles in Sydney and the Illawarra. He presently lives at IRT Edwina Court but first moved to Woonona to live with his late son Danny who died of cancer two years ago.
He is a founding member of Friends of Sydney Town Hall and has been president since 2002. Has is a member of the Sydney-Nagoya Sister City Committee and honorary treasurer of the Sydney-Portsmouth Sister City Committee.
Mr Tonge was also a member of the Rotary Club of Bulli from 2010 until it folded in 2016.
"There were three members over 90 and it wasn't feasible to carry on with such small numbers. I would like to mention them because some of those members have been Rotarians for decades and did some wonderful things for this community."
Mr Tonge has been an honorary secretary/treasurer with Sydney City Council and South Sydney Council Ex-Servicemen and Retirees Committees and an honorary returning officer for the Sydney Credit Union, Sydney Catholic Club and Bulli Workers Club.
"I worked for the Sydney City Council for 42 years,” he said.
Mr Tonge, 81, said much of his community work has happened since retirement.
He said it was a good way to keep himself and his mind active.
"I also organise tours of Sydney Town Hall and walking tours around Sydney. I feel very proud to be recognised like this."
