Dot Hennessy
The Illawarra can thank the parents of Dot Hennessy for everything the tireless community worker has done for the region.
Mrs Hennessy said it was her parents who instilled her community ethic which has seen her awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to vocational education and training, Rotary and the community. Read more
Reece Flaherty
When Reece Flaherty started work on Nyrang Park in Keiraville about 37 years ago it was a paddock, best suited for stock agistment.
That was before he put in years of work regenerating the place – planting trees, taking care of them, carving seats out of huge logs, maintaining the creek – and the result is a beautiful park used every day by the community. Read more
John Shipp
The library system in Australian universities wasn’t too bad in the 1980s.
But it improved out of sight when John Shipp and a couple of colleagues introduced online information into university libraries in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Brian Walsh
Janet Walsh shed a few tears when notified her late husband Brian Walsh would receive a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this year.
‘’I was very honoured when I first received it but it made me cry because he is not here to enjoy it unfortunately,’’ Mrs Walsh said.
Mr Walsh, who passed away on February 13, 2016 was awarded an OAM for service to the community of Shellharbour. Read more
Kieran John Tonge
Corrimal man Kieran John Tonge is recognised with an OAM for service to the community.
Mr Tonge moved to Wollongong 23 years ago and he has performed many voluntary roles in Sydney and the Illawarra. He presently lives at IRT Edwina Court but first moved to Woonona to live with his late son Danny who died of cancer two years ago. Read more
William Dowson
William (Bill) Dowson is recognised with an OAM for service to sport and the Illawarra community. Particularly for his roles with basketball and the Salvation Army.
"I am seriously humbled. I help out where I can. And I am a firm believer that kids in sport are not kids in trouble," he said. Read more
