Geotechnical work along the possible route began last year.
A spokesman for NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the extra funds will allow for further research on issues uncovered by the geotechnical work.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward was pleased by the news.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to continue the work in relation to planning for what is a major road that carries around 22,000 people every day,” Mr Ward said.
He said there was no firm date for when planning work would be complete and construction would begin.
The extension would run from Waterfall to St Peters but Mr Ward said it was yet to be decided whether construction would start in the south and head into Sydney.
“We’re considering a number of options and obviously there are several stages of this project and there’s an argument that says you deal with the most congested parts first and work backwards,” Mr Ward said.
“But that’s still yet to be decided and that’s one of the reasons we’re investing money into planning for this project.”
