The people the violent Qaumi brothers feared were capable of toppling a ruthless gang leader.

But at the end of the Brothers for Life gangland war, many casualties were unintended and innocent victims.

Three years after Mumtaz, Farhad and Jamil Qaumi were arrested during a sweeping crackdown on the infamous Sydney street gang, the brothers were sentenced to decades in jail.

Among the violent crimes the brothers, who came to Australia as refugees in the 1990s, were sentenced for was the shooting of a 13-year-old girl, attempted murder of gangster Michael Odisho and manslaughter of Mohammed Hamzy in Revesby Heights.

Mumtaz, 31, and Farhad, 31, were also jailed over the shooting murder of father-of-two Joe Antoun in December, 2013.

Farhad was sentenced to a maximum of 60 years jail with a non-parole period of 43 years jail while Mumtaz will spend at least 36 years behind bars.

Jamil was sentenced to 30 years jail but will be eligible for parole after 21 years.

In delivering his sentence over three hours in the NSW Supreme Court, Justice Peter Hamill reflected on the many people's lives who had been affected by the "outlandish and lawless violence in which these offenders were involved".

Farhad was the "undisputed and feared" leader of the Blacktown BFL chapter. He ran the gang with fear, demanding unquestionable loyalty and obedience from his members.

In 2013, a person known only as "witness M" told Farhad that Mohamed Hamzy - leader of the BFL Bankstown chapter - wanted him dead.

The message was repeated to Farhad's troops before a plan was formulated to get Hamzy first.

Farhad, Mumtaz and Jamil organised for gunmen to ambush Hamzy in the garage of his Revesby Heights home on October, 29, 2013.

However Hamzy managed to escape the gunfire.

His cousin, who family remembered as a "beautiful soul who wouldn't hurt a fly", Mahmoud Hamzy, was shot three times in the head at close range and killed.

The fatal ambush at the home of the well-known family formed the context for another three shootings over the next several days as the Qaumis feared retribution.

"Luckily nobody else was killed but an innocent teenage girl suffered awful injuries, three men received gunshot wounds and a number of lives were put in peril," Justice Hamill said.

On November 3, 2013 one of Hamzy's right-hand men, Michael Odisho, opened the door of his Winston Hills home and was shot.

The "disreputable fellow", who refused to give evidence at the Qaumi's trial, survived. The failed shooting angered Farhad, who incredulously asked his cronies the next day: "how hard it is to shoot somebody?"

Farhad and Jamil then directed four people, including a driver, to target a low-ranking BFL member.

However it was the member's 13-year-old sister who ended up the victim. About 100 shrapnel pieces were lodged in the teenager's body after the gunmen opened fire at her Blacktown home.

"(The teen) was left with devastating injuries," Justice Hamill said.

"Her capacity to become pregnant and carry a baby full term has been compromised."

???Just after midnight on November 7, gunmen opened fire at the car Abdul Abu-Mahmoud was in outside the Chokolatta cafe in Bankstown.

Mr Abu-Mahmoud and two other men in the car survived. Mumtaz suspected Mr Abu-Mahmoud, who was associated with the Bankstown BFL but not a member, could get access to the address of the Blacktown leaders.

Mumtaz and Jamil were convicted over the Chokolatta Cafe shooting while there was no evidence Farhad was involved.

Standover man Mr Antoun was shot several times at the front door of his home by a man known only as witness L.

In sentencing the brothers, Justice Hamil found Mumtaz was "not without hope of some rehabilitation".

While he wasn't satisfied the maximum penalty was appropriate for Mumtaz, the length of his sentence would ultimately prove to be a life sentence.

As for Farhad, his sentence needed to be longer than his brothers because his criminal history was worse and his leadership role in organising the shootings and gang activities.

Justice Hamil acknowledged Farhad, like his brothers, was exposed to extraordinary violence in Afghanistan before coming to Australia as a refugee.

The trio were also sentenced for firearm, drug and criminal group offences.

Outside court, Homicide Squad Detective Chief Inspector David Laidlaw paid tribute to the bravery of some witnesses, who gave evidence to "quell the tide of this criminal milieu".
