Refugee Action Collective Illawarra (RAC) will mark Refugee Week with stalls in Wollongong Mall from Tuesday to Saturday, June 24.
RAC spokesperson Dr Marg Perrott said the stalls running daily from 11am to 2pm, will also have a petition, information and merchandise.
‘’Wollongong is known for it's welcome for refugees and we are confident that many local people will join with us to continue to pressure the government to Close the Camps and Bring Them Here,’’ Dr Perrott said.
‘’The Federal Government's recent announcement of $70 million compensation to people detained illegally on Manus Island proves that these detention centres are cruel and inhumane, and should be closed immediately.’’
Dr Perrott said there were about 900 men on Manus and 390 men, women and children on Nauru.
‘’The majority of these have been recognised as refugees, and the situation on Manus is becoming more critical every day,’’ she said.
‘’These people could be be resettled in the Illawarra, let alone in the whole of Australia.’’
