The trainer travelled to the Illawarra with the utmost confidence and wasn’t disappointed when Goldfinch led from start to finish to claim the Duck Creek Dash 2YO Maiden Handicap (1000m).
“I expected her to win,” Englebrecht said.
“I expected her to roll along so they would have to catch her. That was the instructions and with the 2kgs off her back, she came in well at the weights.”
Apprentice Beany Panya executed the plan to perfection. Goldfinch ($2.90) bolted straight to the lead from barrier seven and made every post a winner out in front. The filly kicked three lengths clear of the field at the top of the straight and it proved to be a winning break. Despite tiring late, Goldfinch held on to beat Joe Pride’s Choice Harvest ($19), with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Soviet ($5.50) in third.
