An 85th-minute goal from Nathan Millgate helped the hosts to a come-from-behind victory at Lambert Park and cosigned the Wolves to their second consecutive defeat.
Wollongong had given themselves every chance of leaving Sydney with a share of the spoils when star striker Patrick Antelmi opened the scoring in the 34th minute.
However, the lead was short-lived.
Former Wolves attacker Jordan Murray equalised with a header just 60 seconds later to ensure the two clubs went into the break on level terms.
Twenty minutes into the second half, the ledger swung further into APIA’s favour when Wollongong’s Nico Bernal was sent off.
They would capitalise on the extra man when Millgate scored the winner with five minutes remaining.
The Wolves are now five points out of the top-five.
