But there’s no need to be mad – the Rabbit Hopping Society of Australia’s inaugural Wollongong competition is coming to town.
On Sunday, the suburban park will be transformed into an obstacle course as bunnies of all abilities are put through their paces at a “major hopping event”.
“Rabbits are natural hoppers, they love to be out and about,” the society’s event secretary, and Corrimal resident, Tracy Worley said.
“People don’t give credit for their ability and intellect, they are very clever.”
The rabbits, wearing leads and harnesses, navigate a variety of obstacles with a trainer in tow.
Some, dubbed “champion rabbits”, can jump up to a metre high.
“It’s very similar to horse jumping,” Ms Worley said.
“We have a straight course, we have a crooked course and we have water courses.
“It’s quite entertaining, but it can be competitive.”
Ms Worley has seven “hopping” rabbits and also shows the cuddly creatures.
The Wollongong rabbit hopping competition will be held at the park, on Robson Street, from 9am to 4pm.
About 100 people are set to get their hop on, including teams from across Sydney and places further afield, like Goulburn and Lithgow.
And while anyone can bring their rabbit along, not every bunny is cut out for competition jumping.
“They have to be a bit outgoing … the ones that like to dig holes and get out, they’re the ones you need to train up,” she said.
