American author John Steinbeck once said: “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness”.

It’s true winter makes us appreciate the change of seasons into spring and then the glory of summer.
Yet it is a time of year to be celebrated, particularly in this region.
For many of us in the coastal areas of the Illawarra, winter is hardly a challenge.
When we look inland to the highlands and to places like Canberra, that’s a pretty tough version of winter.
When you see the temperature guages of areas like Canberra pushing toward double digits into the minus degrees you quickly realise we have very little to bemoan in this region.
Winter in the Illawarra deserves to be celebrated.
Some other regions to our north have successfully – and some to the south admittedly – have promoted the winter virtues well.
Perhaps as a community there is a greater opportunity that exists to promote our region during this glorious season.
That is why next week we will be celebrating a special mid-winter edition of the Illawarra Mercury.
Our Friday, July 14, edition will celebrate all things cool, literally and otherwise.
Our Illawarra Mercury team will be on a special location braving the elements on Thursday, July 13, to produce the printed edition and we will give you an inside view via our digital platforms.
We will be live from the balcony of the Novotel Northbeach in amongst 140-odd “Annas and Elsas” celebrating a Frozen high tea for the school holidays at the hotel’s temporary ice rink.
We will reveal details of a special photographic competition where we will be asking readers to share some of their favourite images of the region.
There will be some live Facebook videos across the day including a couple of guests from the Illawarra Hawks to talk about the looming National Basketball League season.
Keep watching our Instagram account as some of the region's keen photographers will work with the Illawarra Mercury’s very own photographic team to bring you some winter images of North Beach and surrounds.
Winter in the Illawarra is worth celebrating.
Let’s enjoy it while it lasts because spring and summer are just around the corner.
