I’m not talking about bad Tinder dates or finding a cockroach in the bottom of your servo instant-coffee-machine coffee cup.
I’ve experienced both of those and whilst traumatic, I did survive.
I’m talking about North Korea.
We seem to be sleeping pretty well with the current level of unrest and human rights abuses going on in Africa and Syria and even in Greece and Turkey. They’re so far away!
But you know what’s close? North Korea.
I’m no expert in North Korean politics, but I do know that its people live under tight controls. Moving in and out of North Korea is very difficult and the outside perception is controlled to ignore human rights abuses which, if you believe some of the people who have managed to escape the mysterious nation, are frequent and severe.
Tourists are led on controlled tours. The Korean People’s Army is the largest military institution in the world, with over 9 million active and reserve members.
There are state-sanctioned haircuts, so men and women have a choice of 15 different hair styles. The North Korean calendar is different too…Year 1 is our 1912 – that’s when Kim Il-sung their former president was born.
Do a Wikipedia search on Cult of Personality and you will see Kim Il-sung’s name up in lights alongside Saddaam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Joseph Stalin.
So now it’s 106 in North Korea, and his son Kim Jong-un is in charge.
The question of whether or not we will wake up to horrendous news of nuclear warfare remains to be seen. And if that wasn’t scary enough, we are relying on the actions of Donald Trump to see us through.
Like I said, there are too many threats in the world for my liking.
