Defending champion Ted Clarke and two-time winner Brian Harriott are among players from six clubs to qualify for Saturday’s quarter-finals of the Zone 16 Senior Singles at Dapto Citizens Bowling Club.

Four rounds were played last weekend at Kiama, Bomaderry, Dapto Citizens and Corrimal bowling clubs with a field of 68 reduced to the final eight on Saturday.

Warilla star Clarke won three matches, including beating the 2011, 2012 and 2015 champion Rick Malley (Dapto Citz) 31-24 in round two.

Clarke then had a tough 31-22 win over Eddie Tolhurst (Towradgi) and beat Wiseman Park’s Phil Wallace 31-20 in round four.

Clarke now takes on Dapto Citizens’ Warren Haviland on Saturday for a spot in the semi-finals.

Haviland beat Gary Hynd (Fairy Meadow) 31-23, Brian Bott (Wiseman Park) 31-14 and Oak Flats’ Peter Mead 31-18.

Figgy Bowlo’s John Jovcevski had arguably the toughest run to qualify for the last eight after being among only eight bowlers drawn to play in the first round.

Jovcevski beat Phil Matthews (Towradgi) 31-22 in round one, then advanced past another round one winner Rod Raftery (Albion Park) 31-25, and then beat a third round one winner Col Cheadle (Dapto Huntley) 31-21, before booking his quarter-final spot with a thrilling last end 31-30 win over Corrimal’s Ken Hunt.

Hunt was involved in two of the four 31-30 matches over the four rounds last weekend, with the Corrimal bowler edging out Towradgi’s Ron Duffy in round three.

Jovcevski now meets Dapto Citizens’ Graham Tootell in Saturday’s quarter-final with Tootell also scoring a 31-30 win over Albion Park’s Roger Kelly in round three, plus had another tense win in round two, edging past Warilla’s Sam Glen 31-28.

Fairy Meadow have a representative in the last eight with Laurie Matrini to take on Kiama’s Mick Weir.

Matrini has been in terrific form with wins by a combined 46 shots over Woonona’s Neville Bywater (31-13); Gerry Webster (31-16) and Dapto Huntley’s Rob Clayton (31-18).

Mick Weir beat Oak Flats’ Paul Wesley in round 4 and the winner of Weir versus Matrini on Saturday will take on either Jovcevski or Tootell for a place in the final.

Dapto Citizens’ Brian Harriott won Zone 16 Senior Singles in 2008 and 2010 and takes on in-form Corrimal bowler Robbie Fahey for a spot in the semi-finals.

Harriott has beaten Ray Groves (Fairy Meadow) 31-14, Brian Purdie (Towradgi) 31-22 and Woonona’s Ken Rootsey 31-13 to make the final eight, while Fahey’s three wins have been over Towradgi’s Alex Jeffries 31-7, Alan Smith (Warilla) 31-8 and Steve Richards (Woonona) 31-17.

The winner of the Fahey vs Harriott match takes on either Haviland or Clarke.

The semi-finals and final will be played at Kiama on July 23. This weekend four rounds of the Zone 16 Open Singles and President’s Reserve Singles will be played. Both finals will also be at Kiama BC on July 23.
