A huge field of 87 players this weekend begin their quest to win the Illawarra Open Singles title – arguably the biggest crown in Zone 16 championship bowls.

Defending champion Greg Jeans has left the region, but Warilla’s Aaron Teys – the singles champion in 2012 and 2015 and back-to-back 2013-14 winner Brett Pieper (Dapto Citizens) are chasing a third crown.

Teys takes on Oak Flats’ Terry Booker in round one at Figgy Bowlo on Saturday morning (9.10am), with Pieper having a first round bye and up against promising Wiseman Park bowler Tom Hull at Towradgi in Rd 2 on Saturday afternoon (1pm).

Mark Larsen takes on Harley McDonald in a standout Rd 2 clash at Figgy Bowlo, while top bowlers Jesse Noronha, Shane Garvey, Jeremy Henry and Wes Falconer are among the big names keen to win a first Open Singles.  Just eight bowlers will advance to the quarter-finals on July 22 at headquarters Kiama BC, with the semi-finals and final on July 23.
