Lone Kiama team win the Illawarra District Womens Triples

A Kiama team won five games over five playing days to take out the prestigious Illawarra District Womens Triples championship at Windang Bowling Club.

 Champions: Kiama's Illawarra Womens District Triples champions, Jacki Kirk, Gaye Reynolds and Melanie Walker played outstanding bowls in a tournament which featured teams from 13 local clubs.

Lead Melanie Walker was outstanding throughout and along with Gaye Reynolds and Jacki Kirk, Kiama beat teams from Towradgi, Warilla and Dapto, before a 23-11 win over an Oak Flats rink skipped by Leanne Smith in the final.

The winning team were the only Kiama entry and one of just six teams drawn to play in the first round, with the other 29 entries having a bye into round two.

The Kiama team played tremendous bowls in a variety of conditions and seemed to improve with every round victory.

They had their toughest win in round two, beating Judy Hirjee (Warilla) and partners 18-15 before a 33-6 win over Maureen Westbury (Dapto) in the quarter-finals at Dapto Citizens BC.

The Kiama side then beat Warilla’s Deborah Waldron 23-13 in the semis at Dapto BC before a 12 shot win over Smith and partners Julie Martin and Debra Kelly in the final.

Kiama will now represent Illawarra at the Regional Playoff  at Bargo on August 9.

The Illawarra Triples featured a high standard of bowls with teams from Kiama, Warilla, Dapto, Towradgi, Figtree, Dapto Citizens, Woonona, Albion Park, Windang, Oak Flats, Wiseman Park, Bellambi, and Thirroul represented.
