It comes as Metronode spends $150 million on infrastructure projects in 2017 with new facilities underway at Derrimut Melbourne, Silverwater Sydney and Unanderra. The Wollongong facility is expected to open in November and is an extension of the world-class facility that opened in 2013. A second stage of that facility then open in 2015.
Metronode is a major player in the data centre space and was recently named as the Best Data Centre Operator at the 2017 CommsDay Edison Awards.
Chief executive David Yuile said the company was presently the fastest builder of new data centres in Australia.

Metronode data centres offer state-of-the-art, technologically-superior facilities to help our customers grow and scale at speed. Our facilities are also a natural fit for hyperscale cloud providers. The NSW Government GovDC is the major tenant of the first facility built at Unanderra but the second data hall under construction will provide co-location services for Illawarra enterprise and commercial customers.
“Metronode has been trusted by the NSW Government to build and operate data centres since 2012, helping them to consolidate 160 data centres into two Metronode facilities. We look forward to welcoming local Illawarra businesses into our new Unanderra hall,” Mr Yuile said.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the expanding data centre was a great fit for the city of innovation. “It is great to see the millions of dollars being invested in the Wollongong region”.
“And the impact of building a facility like this has a ripple affect on our local community and our local economy and utilises the skill sets that are already here. I would like to say thank you to Metronode.”
Government Digital Communities and Marketplace Services director Derek Paterson said the built-for-purpose data centres in Silverwater and Unanderra deliver the highest standards in security, availability and efficiency to the public sector.
“Energy-efficiency is a key feature of our data centres, with the Unanderra and Silverwater facilities awarded an impressive NABERS 4.5 data centre rating. The GovDC program has been hugely successful and Metronode’s expansion is timely as the demand for data centres grows,” Mr Paterson said.
