The warning is in place for Saturday and Sunday, with reports of six to eight-foot waves hitting the Illawarra coast.
“Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming,” the warning stated.
Surf Life Saving's Adam Weir warned people to be careful this weekend.
“We would urge people considering activities along the coast, particularly rockfishing, to take safety precautions or give it a miss altogether this weekend,” Mr Weir said.
Further down the coast at Merry Beach in Kioloa the hazardous surf conditions claimed the life of a rock fisherman.
Surf Life Saving recommendations include:
- Avoiding rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches or rock-shelves
- Only swimming at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags. Check out www.beachsafe.org.au for patrolled locations and times
- Checking the official Bureau of Meteorology forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities
- Boaters should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket
- If witnessing an in-water emergency dial Triple Zero – Police
