After splitting the weekend’s games against National Wheelchair Basketball League title rivals Kilsyth, Wollongong sealed the series against the Cobras and first place.

The Hawks raced to 23-point half-time lead on Saturday before prevailing 91-65.

They now have a final round bye, as their rivals fight it out for the playoff positions. 

Early defensive pressure forced former Hawks star Tristan Knowles, the league’s leading three-point shooter to put up a season high 12 three point attempts including his first three shots of the game. 

In contrast, Michael Auprince dominated inside, finishing with 26 points, while Nick Taylor was also impressive in a 24-point, 14-assistant performance.

“Aupie was huge again for us, getting inside and shooting a high percentage,” Roller Hawks captain Brett Stibners said.

“Nick was also outstanding. He didn’t hesitate and shot very well.”

The Roller Hawks out-rebounded the hosts 39-27 and had 32 assists compared to the Cobras’ 15.

“In offence we moved the ball around and found the open person,” Stibners said.

“Our bench came on and contributed as well. Clay (Kelly) came on and made some good shots and Hannah’s (Dodd) defence was strong.”

Without Stibners for the second game on Sunday, the Hawks conceded the final game of their regular season, falling 75-59.

His absence cost the Roller Hawks who trailed at every break with Kilsyth shooting at a much higher percentage compared to the previous day and four scorers in double figures.

The Roller Hawks struggled to find the bottom of the net shooting the ball at just 37 per cent and losing the rebounding count 40-30.

Knowles was the standout for the Cobras, with 20 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds. 

Auprince tallied 21 for the Hawks, while Luke Pople had 16 points and 10 assists.

It was only the second loss for the season, but they finish their 18-game campaign on 50 points, amassing 1361 points. 

The Cobras are almost certain to finish second, with Sydney Metro Blues, Queensland Spinning Bullets and Perth Wildcats fighting for the elimination final places.

Sydney will need to win just one game against Perth to secure their berth in the finals. 

The major semi-final will be played at Kilsyth Stadium on Friday, August 18, with the preliminary and grand finals the same weekend.
