She’d barely have another ride at the Illawarra Turf Club after that day, but it wouldn’t prevent the promising young gun from completing her goal. Despite a desperate late play from defending champion Brock Ryan to try and wrestle the title from her grasp on the last day of the season, King was able to add her name to a notable list of apprentice title winners.
She finished on 56 points for the season, with Ryan (54) and Nick Heywood (40) also having strong campaign.
King, who has spent the bulk of the past three months riding at Saturday metropolitan meetings, is the third female apprentice in the past four seasons to win the title, with Winona Costin and Jess Taylor also tasting success before Ryan won last year.
