The 115th commemoration of the 1902 Mt Kembla Mine Disaster will be held on Monday, July 31.
The event’s focal point as in previous years will be the annual 96 Candles Ceremony at Windy Gully Cemetery, Kembla Heights from 6.30pm.
‘’As usual 96 candles will be lit for the 96 disaster victims and other miners of the world who've lost their lives in the course of their work,’’ Mt Kembla Mining Heritage committee chairperson Elizabeth Roberts said.
A number of memorial events will also be held on Sunday, July 30, including the Greenacres Mountain to Mountain 13.5km Challenge, which starts on Mt Keira Rd and ends at Mt Kembla.
Also on that day, the last of the memorial trees for the 17 WWI soldiers linked to Mt Kembla, who died between 1917 and 1919, will be planted at the Mt Kembla Memorial Pathway in Stones Road.
Mt Kembla Public School will also hold its annual ‘Day on the Lawn’. The event running from 10am to 3pm includes activities, food and live entertainment.
This coincides with Mt Kembla Mining Heritage presenting some of its displays in the old school building as well as its Heritage Photo Booth.
The 115th Mt Kembla Mine Disaster Memorial Church Service will be held in the Soldiers’ and Miners’ Memorial Church on Sunday from 2pm.
