Now that the NDIS rollout has begun, officially since July 1 in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, how does NDIS rollout affect participants, carers, providers and the community?
Participants
If you are a person with disability who wishes to participate in the NDIS, you must first be assessed against the access requirements.
If you don’t meet the access requirements, and you live in a launch site, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) may be able to provide you with information about other supports.
Carers
The role of families and carers is often essential in supporting people with disability to realise these goals so will be included in discussions about supports.
Guardians or nominees of people with disability play an important role in the NDIS, as they represent the interest of the person and they can contact NDIS on behalf of the person.
Providers
An important port of call as providers will have plenty of information at their disposal and have the training on how to help clients.

Community
Various community groups and other relevant organisations will be involved too.
Information packs on the NSW rollout have been developed as a resource for providers and future participants.
These resources include a range of fact sheets and a frequently asked questions document on the NDIS and the NSW rollout.
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is working closely with the relevant Commonwealth and NSW government departments.
This is to ensure there is a smooth transition to the NDIS for people with disability, their families, carers and providers.
They provide:
- Information and referral
- Support to access community services and activities
- Individualised plans and supports
- Early intervention
- Where necessary, funded supports that may be one-off support or a funded support package
Call 1800 800 110 or visit the website at www.ndis.gov.au for more information on how the NDIS can help you.
