Finally able to bring you a Far South Coast fishing report after weeks of little to no fishing action. Local Narooma fishing charter operator John Moore is back on his boat “Awsum” after a holiday to Bali where he caught a ruby snapper and got bitten off by some dogtooth tuna, jigging 600g jigs in 250m.

Closer to home, John reports the snapper have started showing on reefs offshore from Tuross Heads. Interestingly the dreaded leatherjackets have been replaced with big schools of 40cm barracouta. He also boated a nice little sawshark, only the second he has seen in the last 15 years at Narooma. Good news is that there were also plenty of sand flathead between Narooma and Tuross.
Graham up at Moruya reports Tuross has produced some good jewish for those drifting the deep channel near the boatshed. Live baits and a slack tide has seen a few boated.
Some large perch have been hanging around the oyster leases and have been caught using lightly weighted grubs. Flathead are being caught in the shallow back lakes on soft plastics. Those targeting the same area using small longshank hooks and fresh beach worms have also seen some nice whiting caught.
Moruya has been very slow going as of late and has also filled up with a very slimy weed making lure fishing quite difficult. The perch are still biting around the bridge area, keeping in mind it is closed season and all must be released.
Some nice size squid are coming in off the rocks on squid jigs at south Broulee and Bingi area. Moruya breakwall has been fishing well for tailor using a gang hook setup and full pillies. Windsock Beach has produced plenty of salmon last week on pillies and a paternoster surf rig.
Local community groups, councils and individuals are reminded to apply for funding to improve local fish habitats through the New South Wales Government’s Habitat Action Grants Program.
Previous projects have included reducing erosion by stabilising river banks, removing invasive weeds and re-establishing native vegetation on riverbanks, removing barriers to fish movements as well as re-snagging waterways and restoring lost habitats.
