The victim, a Wollongong father-of-three, has categorised the assault as a one-punch attack.
Andrew Teao, 37, was walking through Crown Street Mall with friends about 3.30am Sunday, after a night out in the city.
According his partner, Marion Rapana, he stopped near the 7-11 convenience store to help a female who approached his group.

”She approached them and asked for a smoke, she was cold and crying,” Ms Rapana said, in a post to social media.
“Andrew gave her his jumper and he was giving her information about [a] refuge to go [to] …
“Next minute a guy randomly punched him and Andrew was knocked out.”
Ms Rapana said the assault continued “when clearly Andrew is already out cold, with other males involved”.
“This happened all because this man, who is a humble, kind, hardworking supportive father and partner was simply trying to help someone,” she said.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the site about 3.40am.
They transported a man suffering facial injuries to Wollongong Hospital.
He was discharged on Sunday.
