Last Saturday was a prime example;  when dawn broke, the wind was howling but by 10am it had abated and all seemed hunky dory until towards sundown when it came back with vengeance.

Con Adam and Chad Davison, who were in standby mode, hit the water in that small window and not far from Bass Point hit upon a school of very hungry striped tuna.

They were not the small jelly bean sized either but solid stripies in the 4 to 5 kilo ranges that proved to be excellent fun on 5 kilo tackle. The diehard lads secured enough snapper baits for quite a while and were safely back on the trailer well before the weather turned foul.

Flathead have been the mainstay with most anglers chasing a feed by drifting until they find them.

This has been the only option as the annoying barracouta have been hanging around almost anywhere and everywhere, removing the option of anchoring and berleying for other species like reds or mowies.

The barracouta is usually a sign of cold water, yet if you hit the beach there’s a patch of warm water hugging the coast and warm enough that Teliah McElhone dragged Dad out for a beach fish and caught a dart off Warilla beach.

Although unusual, this is not the only report of dart that has been reported with a few beaches further south holding this summer Northern species.
