17-year-old Tokyo Olympics hopeful Campbell will take on former junior world-championship silver-medalist Nina Schuster for the local title in what will be the feature bout on a stacked card for Illawarra fighters.
The reigning NSW titlist, has claimed a Golden Gloves title and a silver at June’s national titles behind eventual Youth Commonwealth Games bronze-medalist Tiki Fraser in the last 12 months.
The bout against 19-year-old Schuster promises to be a step up but father and coach Adrian Campbell – himself a veteran of 31 pro fights – is confident of a strong showing.
“She’s competed with Tiki Fraser who just won a youth Commonwealth Games bronze medal so she’s definitely ready for this level,” Campbell said.
“She’s a three-time NSW champion and a Golden Gloves champion so, while it is a step up, we’re definitely ready for it. Tywarna’s always been so dedicated to what she does.
“She trains like a professional. Having been around as a professional, I know what it takes to get to the top and I’ve also seen the shortcuts fighters can take but she doesn’t take them.
“She always gives me 100 per cent and when she does that it’s easy as a coach and her father to give her 100 per cent back.”
It’s a dedication that leaves the family confident a spot on the 2020 Olympic team is not beyond the teenager.
“We want to keep her amateur up until 2020 with the Tokyo Olympics and hopefully qualify for that,” Campbell said.
“After that, it’s always been her plan to move into the professional ranks. We’ve always thought she’s capable of big things as an amateur and a professional if she keeps working as hard as she does.”
The card will be a family affair for Team Campbell with brother Zeke and teammates Maninga Klulow and Steve Ryan featuring among a host of other Illawarra fighters.
Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children and available at the door with the action kicking off at 5.30pm.
