While a bathroom serves a functional purpose, many home renovators are turning their focus towards creating a sanctuary where we can relax and retreat from our busy lives.
However, when renovating your bathroom there are so many choices that need to be made and one very important decision is what tiles to use.
Bathroom tiles come in many shapes, sizes, materials, styles, geometry and colours. So where do you start?
Jason Hughes and Dave Smith, the directors/ project managers at South Coast Tile & Slate in Oak Flats recommend people visit show homes and peruse online sites like Pinterest to get an idea of what style they like and what look they want to achieve.

“It’s also important that they set a budget so we can direct them to tiles that will fit within their price range,” Jason said. “You should also have a chat to our staff as they have many ideas to help you achieve your dream bathroom.”
As with everything, the bathroom tiles you choose should reflect your own style and personality, however opting for popular colours like neutrals, greys, charcoals and of course white will ensure your tile colours are less likely to date.
According to South Coast Tile & Slate current tile trends include subway tiles for walls laid in straight, brickbond or herringbone patterns, stone and polished concrete look tiles, timber look tiles, larger format tiles of 300 x 600mm for the wall and floor (note that these require a grate drain), Lappato (semi polished) is a popular finish, and patterned Moroccan style tiles are popular for floors or feature walls.
Many of the bathroom renovations you’ll see on home renovating shows or in magazines will have tiles all the way from floor to ceiling. This look will create a sense of space and give your bathroom an added wow factor, but be aware that it will also come with a heftier price tag.
“The decision to tile from floor to ceiling or not generally comes down to the cost,” Dave said.
“If people can afford it, they often go ahead and tile from floor to ceiling. However, it is very common to tile to the ceiling in the shower and to 1.2m around the rest of the room. This looks especially effective when using a matching floor and wall tile.”
A bathroom renovation is one of those areas that is best left to the experts as there are so many elements that you need to get right.
A company like South Coast Tile & Slate has extensive knowledge in supplying and fitting tiles.
“We offer a full service including removing and disposing of existing fittings, plumbing, waterproofing, custom floor grates and supplying and installing new tiles and fittings,” Jason said.
Once finished you’ll have a space where you can relax, refresh and renew.
