Smyth claimed a two-and-one victory over American Will Zalatoris on Friday (AEST), birdieing the 17th to advance.
After being four up through eight, Smyth had to overcome a spirited fightback from Zalatoris, who came within one with four to play.
Zalatoris is No.10 on the international amateur golf rankings, with Smyth at No.29 pre-tournament.
Smyth will now meet another American Doc Redman in the quarter-finals on Saturday (AEST).
He advanced to the match play rounds after finishing tied for 35th in the two-round stroke play section at two-over.
Scot Connor Syme looms as one of the biggest threats, ranked 13 in the world, but is on the other side of the match play draw to Smyth.
