Illawarra state and federal Labor MPs, as well as Labor’s Gilmore candidate Fiona Phillips met with Labor’s State Shadow Minister for Skills Prue Car at West Wollongong TAFE on Friday.
They met to sign a pledge to guarantee funding for TAFE if they win government at respective future elections.
Labor's policy guarantees funding for TAFE at both a state and federal level.
Federal Labor has pledged to invest an additional $637.6 million into TAFE and vocational education; guaranteed at least two-thirds of public vocational education funding for TAFE; and will invest in a new $100 million Building TAFE for the Future Fund to re-establish TAFE facilities in regional communities, meet local industry needs and support teaching for the digital economy.
Meanwhile, state Labor has promised at least 70 per cent of public funding for vocational education and training to the TAFE commission; and to establish a Private Providers Investigations Unit to investigate "dodgy" training providers and clean up the sector.
Earlier this week, Mrs Phillips resigned as a TAFE teacher amid claims the organisation moved to “politically gag” her.
