This week might be all about books for students but getting creative with their costume-making skills will be the order of the day for many Illawarra parents this Book Week.
Fancy dress book parades, like the one planned for Cringila Public School on Tuesday, will be held throughout the country as primary school students celebrate children’s literature.
The importance of reading will also be highlighted during the week with displays and reading activities.
Escape To Everywhere is the theme of this year’s CBCA Children's Book Week, which runs August 19-26.
Classroom teachers as well as teacher and public librarians will develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to the theme to highlight the importance of reading.
The importance of Book Week is highlighted by a recent YouGov survey, which showed one in seven Australian children leave school unable to read well.
The survey revealed that improving early literacy required parent engagement, book ownership and allowing children to choose books for themselves.
