The outcry will no doubt come. “Why should local government candidates concern themselves with issues on the federal spectrum such as marriage equality?,” will no doubt be the chorus.

Labor council candidates and supporters gathered in front of the council’s headquarters on Burelli Street on Monday to make their voice heard.
They’re calling on the city of Wollongong to fly the rainbow flag in support of marriage equality ahead of the national postal survey being run by the Australian Electoral Commission. Naturally, the call will be met by the suggestion it's actually none of the council's concern.
Hopefully the same people taking that line were prepared to berate the council over taking a firm stance on issues such as the privatisation of hospital et al where councils choose to tread outside of their jurisdiction without fear.
Time is running out to be eligible to be able to vote in the postal poll on marriage equality being run by the Australian Electoral Commission.
We are calling on people to make sure they are registered to vote and use the #YourVoiceYourVote hashtag on social media to ensure others are doing the same.
You are eligible to enrol if _
- are an Australian citizen, or eligible British subject,
- aged 18 years and over, and
- have lived at your address for at least one month.
- If you are an Australian living overseas, you must have registered an international address to participate in the postal vote.
